Ibn Battuta, a famous Moroccan wanderer, is claimed to have spent some time in the province of Hunnur under the protection of Nawayath Sultan Jamal al-Din.This location is currently known as Hosapattana and is situated in Honnavar.

The ruins of a historic mosque and its minaret may still be found in the village. The area was under the sovereignty of the Maratha Empire in the 1750s and then became part of the Mysore Kingdom, which relinquished it to the British at the end of the Fourth Mysore War in 1799. Originally, it was part of the Kanara district under Madras Presidency. In 1859, the district was separated into North and South Kanara districts. In 1862, the British officially moved Uttara Kannada district to the Bombay Presidency.

After India gained independence in 1947, the Bombay Presidency was reorganized as Bombay State. The southern section of Bombay State was merged with Mysore State in 1956, and the latter was renamed Karnataka in 1972. Uttara Kannada was a historic sea commerce location that was frequented by Arabs, Dutch, Portuguese, French, and, subsequently, British. Ibn Battuta traveled along this path on one or more occasions.

The ancient Sadashivgad fort is currently a renowned tourist site near the Kali river bridge, which was erected at the junction of the river and the Arabian Sea. It is significant and scenic. Rabindranath Tagore, a prominent Bengali poet and Nobel laureate, visited Uttara Kannada in 1882 and dedicated an entire chapter to the town in his memoirs. Rabindranath Tagore, 22, lived with his brother Satyendranath Tagore, Uttara Kannada’s district judge. There are many Chardo families in this region since they migrated as a result of the Portuguese persecution in Goa.
