Shivamogga, according to traditional interpretations, derives its name from associations with Lord Shiva. The name is linked to several aspects of Shiva: ‘Shiva – Mukha’ meaning the ‘Face of Shiva,’ ‘Shivana – Mogu’ referring to the ‘Nose of Shiva,’ and ‘Shivana – Mogge’ which denotes the ‘Buds of Flowers Intended for Shiva.’
Legend has it that the area once housed the ashram of the renowned sage Durvasa, known for his fiery temper. This sage was known for keeping a pot of sweet herbal concoction boiling on the stove. One day, some cowherds, intrigued by the pot, tasted the drink and referred to the place as ‘Sihi-Moge,’ which means ‘Sweet Pot.’ Over time, this term evolved into ‘Shivamogga.’
Looking back into history, archaeological findings indicate that humans inhabited the region in ancient times. In 1881, two early stone-age tools were unearthed in a ‘Shingle bed’ near Nyamati, not far from the Tungabhadra river. These tools were bifacial pebble implements crafted from quartzite, one featuring a rounded working edge and the other a pointed edge.
Additionally, several Neolithic sites have been discovered, including:
-
Guddemaradi, situated on the banks of the Tunga river near Shivamogga city
-
Nilaskal, located near Nagar in the Hosanagar taluk
-
Kunda hill, positioned near Agumbe in the Thirthahalli taluk
-
Yeddegudde, also near Thirthahalli
-
Ashoka Nagar, Anaveri, and Nagasamudra, within Bhadravati taluk
Furthermore, three Iron Age megalithic sites have been identified in the district. These sites, each with distinct megalithic structures, are:
-
Nilaskal and Shivamogga, featuring menhirs
-
Arehalli, located in the Thirthahalli taluk, known for its portholed burial chambers
