The Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) is a prominent public hospital located in Hyderabad, Telangana, India. This esteemed institution is named after its founder, the 7th Nizam of the former Hyderabad State, and was inaugurated by Princess Durreshehvar. It operates as an institute under the State Legislature Act, specifically under the Andhra Pradesh State Legislature Act. The hospital boasts a sprawling campus situated in the Punjagutta area of Hyderabad.
NIMS holds recognition from the Medical Council of India and is governed by a comprehensive administrative structure. This includes oversight by the Governing Council, the Executive Board, the Director, and other statutory bodies. For over two decades, the institute has been publishing a monthly journal titled “The Clinical Proceedings of Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences,” which has become an important contribution to medical literature.
The history of NIMS dates back to the inauguration of the Nizam’s Orthopaedic Hospital on December 22, 1964, by Sri S. K. Patil, who was then the Union Minister for Railways. The first Superintendent of this hospital was M. Ranga Reddy, a renowned orthopedic surgeon. Dr. Reddy played a crucial role in convincing the 7th Nizam to establish a specialty hospital dedicated to orthopedics and was instrumental in its construction. Initially, the hospital was under the management of the H.E.H. the Nizam’s Charitable Trust until it was eventually handed over to the Andhra Pradesh Government. Dr. Ranga Reddy continued to administer the hospital during this transition period.
Over the years, NIMS has evolved into a comprehensive medical institution. It offers a wide range of academic programs, including MD, MS, M. Ch, D.M, and Ph.D. courses in approximately 40 disciplines, all of which are recognized by the National Medical Commission. Additionally, the institute conducts various paramedical postgraduate diploma courses, providing specialized training and education in multiple healthcare fields.
In 2013, NIMS undertook a significant expansion of its facilities, adding two new hospital blocks. Designed by Manchanda Associates, this expansion included a 300-bed Super Specialty Hospital and a 200-bed Accident & Trauma Hospital. These two blocks are interconnected by a corridor, enhancing the infrastructure and capacity of the institute.
In November 2022, the Telangana government approved a major expansion project for NIMS, with a budget of ₹1,571 crore. This ambitious project aims to further enhance the institute’s healthcare services by adding 2,000 new beds, including 500 intensive care unit (ICU) beds. The expansion will also increase the number of medical departments to 42, significantly broadening the scope of healthcare services provided by NIMS.

Department of Pulmonology = 4 (Sleep Lab Technician(1) and PFT Lab Technician(1) Respiratory Therapists = 2 With PFT qualification – Any Degree or its equivalent from an recognized University With 2 years experience in PFT Lab and Sleep Lab from any recognized organization.
