The Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) serves as the urban local body responsible for the governance, development, and management of Guwahati. It oversees an area encompassing 216.79 square kilometres of the city. The entire jurisdiction of the GMC is divided into 31 municipal wards, with each ward further segmented into 2, 3, or 4 Area Sabhas. Currently, there are a total of 90 Area Sabhas. The GMC operates under the Guwahati Development Department, Assam.

GMC administers its duties through various branches, sections, and cells located at different offices throughout Guwahati city. The municipal services provided by the GMC include:

1. Property Services: These services involve the assessment, reassessment, and mutation of properties within the city.

2. Infrastructure Development and Maintenance: This includes the development and upkeep of roads and drains, ensuring proper urban infrastructure.

3. Trade Licensing: The issuance and renewal of trade licenses for businesses operating within the city’s jurisdiction.

4. Municipal Markets: The development and maintenance of markets managed by the municipality.

9. Hoarding and Advertisement: Regulation of hoardings and advertisements to maintain city aesthetics and safety.

10. Vital Records: The issuance of birth and death certificates to record vital events.

11. Street Lighting: Installation and maintenance of street lights to ensure adequate illumination and safety.

12. Cesspool Emptying Services: Services for the emptying of cesspools to maintain hygiene and sanitation.

13. Crematorium Services: The construction and maintenance of crematoriums to provide dignified facilities for last rites.

14. Government Program Implementation: Implementation of various central and state government programs, schemes, and projects to benefit the city’s residents.

15. Water Supply Services: Provision of water supply through metered and non-metered connections to both commercial and residential properties.

For administrative purposes, the GMC area is divided into six revenue zones for property tax and trade license matters. Additionally, for conservancy and public works, the area is organized into six engineering divisions. There are over 200,000 assessed holdings within the city and approximately 30,000 water connections serving various commercial and residential households.
