The Palamu District was established on January 1, 1892. Prior to this, it was a subdivision with headquarters at Daltonganj shortly after the insurrection of 1857. In 1871, Pargana Japla and Belauja were shifted from Gaya to Palamu. The early history of Palamu is veiled in mystery and custom. Historically, the region was most likely populated by autonomous tribes. The Kharwars, Oraons, and Cheros essentially controlled over this tact. The Oraons were headquartered in Rohtasgarh, then part of the Shahabad district (which now includes Bhojpur and Rohtas). There is evidence that for a period, a segment of Palamu was controlled from the headquarters of Rohtasgarh.

DPalamu was known by the Mughals as ‘Palaun’ or ‘Palaon’. Palamu’s history is more authentic during the Mughal period. Man Singh gained the governorship of the province of Bihar in 1589 A.D. Man Singh marched against Cheros. The Cheros attempted an unsuccessful blockade, but Man Singh pushed his way through, killing many and imprisoning many Cheros fighters. Nothing is known about the Cheros’ following history until Akbar died in 1605 A.D.

The Cheros of Palamu took advantage of the chaos caused by Akbar’s death. They declared their freedom and ousted the Mughal forces from Palamu. Meanwhile, Anant Rai replaced Bhagwat Rai. Sahbal Rai, the Chero ruler, succeeded him. Sahbal Rai proved to be a great ruler in Palamu. His dominion extended to Chauparan. He also began causing issues with the Mughals. This compelled Jehangir to authorise a Mughal war against Shabal Rai, who was defeated and captured.

After Shabal Rai’s death, Pratap Rai became the Chero king of Palamu. Pratap Rai was a contemporary of Shahjahan. He was a formidable ruler, but the middle of his reign was marked by large-scale Mughal assaults. As a result, even during Pratap Rai’s first years in power, ties between the Mughal and the Chero of Palamu remained antagonistic. Palamu was granted as a Jagir to the Governor of Patna in 1632 A.D. in exchange for an annual payment of one lac thirty-six thousand.
