The Non-Cooperation Movement in Ranchi district mirrored the pattern observed across the rest of India. This movement captured the hearts and minds of the local people, especially the Tana Bhagats, who were deeply influenced by the cause. A significant number of Tana Bhagats attended the Gaya session of the Indian National Congress in December 1922, which was presided over by Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Das. They returned home profoundly moved by the message of the freedom movement. These Tana Bhagats, driven by their newfound inspiration, would trek barefooted over long distances, holding Congress flags in their hands. They carried the message of freedom to the masses in the remote areas of the district, actively participating in meetings organized by non-cooperation workers.
On October 5, 1926, a khadi exhibition was inaugurated in Ranchi at the local Arya Samaj Hall, with the presence of Sri Rajendra Prasad. The Tana Bhagats also participated in this event, which was part of the constructive program launched by Mahatma Gandhi after he suspended the Non-Cooperation Movement in 1922. In 1927, the Simon Commission was boycotted as a continuation of the resistance against British rule. On April 4, 1930, the Tarun Singh (Youth League) of Ranchi organized a meeting in the local municipal park, which was attended by a large number of students from various educational institutions. The leaders at this meeting urged the students to join the Civil Disobedience Movement.
The Salt Satyagraha, initiated by Mahatma Gandhi, received a tremendous response in Ranchi district. The district was also actively involved in the Quit India Revolution of 1942. The arrest of national leaders during this period led to widespread strikes, processions, demonstrations, and disruptions of communication lines. Ranchi played a significant role in the subsequent events that culminated in India’s independence in 1947.
The British infiltration into the political landscape of Chotanagpur coincided with a significant socio-economic revolution. Agrarian discontent arose due to the imposition of begar (forced labor) and illegal rent increases by intermediaries, leading to the Sardari agitation. This movement, named after the leadership provided by the Sardars, had grown significantly by 1887, with many Munda and Oraon cultivators refusing to pay rent to landlords. The Sardari agitation, also known as Larai, reached its peak in 1895 when a socio-religious leader named Birsa Munda emerged. The significance of his role in the social history of Ranchi is evident from the title “Birsa Bhagwan” given to him.
The movement led by Birsa Munda was both agrarian and religious. It was directly linked to the agrarian unrest and seemed to be influenced by Christian ideas. Birsa Munda, who had renounced Christianity, combined spiritual teachings with revolutionary ideals. He proclaimed that the land rightfully belonged to those who had reclaimed it from the forests and, therefore, should not be subject to rent. He declared himself the Messiah and claimed to possess divine healing powers. Birsa’s crusade led to an armed uprising among the misled peasantry, which was swiftly suppressed. Tragically, Birsa Munda died in jail in 1900.
In 1914, a religious movement among the Oraons was initiated by Jatra Oraon from Bishunpur police station. This movement, known as the Tana Bhagat movement, also had its roots in agrarian issues, particularly the economic disparity between Christian converts and the traditional Oraons. The non-cooperation movement initiated by Jatra Oraon and his associates quickly spread to other regions, including Palamu and Hazaribagh.
Ranchi district played a pivotal role in the national freedom movement. Under the guidance of Ganesh Chandra Ghosh, Ranchi became a crucial center for the followers of the Revolutionary party. The district was the venue for two significant meetings between Mahatma Gandhi and Sir Edward Albert Gait, the Lieutenant Governor of Bihar and Orissa, on June 4 and September 22, 1917. These meetings were held in the context of the Champaran Indigo planters’ repressive measures against the raiyats (tenant farmers) of that district. The discussions eventually led to the passing of the Champaran Agrarian Law, known as the Bihar and Orissa Act-I of 1918.
