Khunti is connected with revolt and struggle since it was once a hub of action during the infamous Birsa revolution in 1875. The Ranchi district was divided into four administrative subdivisions: Sadar, Gumla (1902), Khunti (1905), and Simdega (1915). The location is notable in history for its long-running war against the British under the leadership of Birsa Munda, Jharkhand’s revolutionary hero. Khunti is well-known as Jharkhand’s lac production center. This area produces a significant portion of India’s total lac. Lac is a natural polymer (resin) made by a little insect known as Kerria lacca. This bug is specifically grown on the branches of various tree species, including palas, kusum, and ber.

Many indigenous communities in the Khunti area rely on lac farming as a supplementary source of income. This horticulture has taken on a new form and a new lease of life thanks to government help as well as the efforts of many other volunteers and non-governmental organizations.

According to Mazunda legend, King of Chhotangapur Maharaja Madra Munda’s son Setea had eight sons. The eldest of Madra Munda’s eight great grandsons left Ranchi for the south. He founded the Khuntkatti settlement, which he named Khunti.

When Mundas first visited Khunti and its surroundings, they discovered that the area was under the control of the Asuras and Tirkis. The Asuras and Tirkis were terrified when the Mundas, with their imposing stature, emerged in the land. It is said that Munda women used to wear sparkling jewellery weighing up to ten seers apiece, while males might bear weights as heavy as several maunds. To this day, the Mundas recite a couplet in which the Tirkis flee in troops when they see the Mundas approaching with their various jewellery shining in the sun. The Asuras headed west to Basia, Pargana, and Nagra.

According to another tale, the area was named after the epic figure Kunti from the Mahabharata. Kunti and her sons, the Pandavas, had spent some time at this location during their fourteen-year period of incognito. This old notion has helped Khunti gain fame and renown.
