Prior to independence, the whole region of Purbi Singhbhum district was part of the ancient Manbhum district and the Dhalbhum estate. Following independence, it was absorbed into larger Singhbhum. The district’s overall geographical area is around 3533 square kilometres, or roughly 2.03% of the entire state. About 53% of the district’s total area is covered by residual mountains and hills made up of granite, gneiss, and schist.It is part of the Chhotanagpur plateau.The Dalma range stretches from west to east, with deep woodland on the northern side.The Subernarekha River runs from west to south-east.The district is rich in minerals, and they are numerous.

Administratively, this district is split into two sub-divisions: Dhalbhum and Ghatshila.The district is made up of eleven blocks: Golmuri-cum-Jugsalai (Jamshedpur), Potka, Patamda, and Boram in Dhalbhum Sub-Division, and Ghatshila, Musabani, Dumaria, Baharagora, Dhalbhumgarh, Chakulia, and Gurabandha in Ghatshila Sub-Division.There are 231 Panchayats and around 1810 revenue villages, 1669 of which are inhabited while the remaining 141 are uninhabited.The district headquarters are located in Jamshedpur.

The climate in the area is temperate. The annual rainfall ranges from 1200 to 1400 mm. This location is in the path of the south-west monsoon, therefore it receives considerable rain from July to September. The highest temperature during the summer season ranges between 40 and 45 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature in the winter is 8 degrees Celsius. The district is rich in minerals, which are numerous. The principal minerals include Iron Ore, Copper, Uranium, and Gold Kynite.
