Ancient inscriptions dating back to around 200 B.C. indicate that the oldest known settlement in the Satara district is likely Karad, historically referred to as Karhakada. Furthermore, it is believed that Wai, another town in the Satara district, is the legendary ‘Viratnagari,’ where the Pandavas spent their 13th year of exile, as mentioned in the Mahabharata.
After the Mauryan Empire’s influence in the Deccan region waned, the Satavahanas governed this area for nearly two centuries, from around 550 A.D. to 750 A.D. Following them, the region of Satara, along with southern Maharashtra, came under the rule of various dynasties, including the Chalukyas of Badami, the Rashtrakutas, the Silaharas, and the Yadavas of Devgiri. In later years, it was governed by the Bahmani Sultanate, followed by the Adil Shahi dynasty, and then came under Muslim rule. Eventually, the region became part of the Maratha Empire under Shivaji’s leadership, followed by the reigns of Shahu Ram Raja and Shahu II Pratapsinh.
