The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) was established to be a center for promoting excellence in all facets of health and wellness across India. AIIMS comprises a group of autonomous public medical institutes that were designated as “Institutes of National Importance” by an Act of Parliament in 1956.

Among the AIIMS institutions, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Nagpur, was one of four new AIIMS announced during the 2014-15 budget speech under the Pradhan Mantri Swasthya Suraksha Yojna (PMSSY). The foundation stone for AIIMS Nagpur was laid by the Honorable Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, and the Honorable Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Shri Devendra Fadnavis, on April 14, 2017, at Sector 20, MIHAN.

The event was also attended by the Union Cabinet Minister for Road Transport and Highways and Shipping (GoI), Shri Nitin Gadkari, along with several other dignitaries. The primary goal of AIIMS is to address regional disparities in the availability of affordable and reliable tertiary healthcare services and to enhance facilities for quality medical education in the country.

Located on a campus spanning over 150 acres in the Special Economic Zone, MIHAN, AIIMS Nagpur is dedicated to its mission of providing the highest levels of patient satisfaction, healthcare, safety, dignity, and rights through evidence-based clinical practices and transparent management processes. Despite being relatively new, the institute has quickly established itself as a provider of high-quality medical education and training with modern facilities, aspiring to become a Center of Excellence in teaching, patient care, and research. The institute currently enrolls students in MBBS, post-graduation, and Ph.D. courses.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, AIIMS Nagpur rose to the occasion by setting up sample collection and testing facilities, as well as a comprehensive indoor and intensive care facility with approximately 500 beds in a remarkably short period. A dedicated team of specialists provided 24/7 assistance through the COVID triage/screening team and the COVID C.A.R.E.S (Connect, Assist, Reassure, Empathize, Support) initiative, offering holistic management, including physical and mental health support services, to COVID-affected individuals and their families. The institute also established facilities for the diagnosis, management, and rehabilitation of post-COVID complications, including mucormycosis.
